November  2024 Programs:
Quilts of Valor Presentation, Crisis Center Donations

Lynn Colquhoun facilitated a Quilts of Valor Program on November 11 to honor four local veterans.  With much gratitude for their service, we welcomed these veterans and their families to this special meeting. The Mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members who have been touched by war with healing quilts. Konza Prairie Quilters Guild co-sponsors the Kansas Prairie Quilts of Valor Group 89865. For more information about Quilts of Valor, visit the foundation's website by clicking on the logo.

Loren Reiswig enlisted as an 18-year-old to serve in the Vietnam War. As a bonus at the ceremony, he was also honored as the recipient of the Vietnam Veterans Lapel Pin for dignified service, as  part of the Commemoration of 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. During his active duty time, Loren was wounded by shrapnel and still carries a piece of metal that could not be removed as reminder of this injury.  In recognition for his meritorious service, John has been awarded three Purple Hearts. His QOV was made by Dona Koster.

Job Allred is currently active duty serving at Fort Riley.  He serves as an engineer with heavy equipment both domestic and abroad. Job was joined by his family to witness his QOV recognition, and his quilt was made by members of the KPQG.

Dr. John Ball served several tours of duty overseas,  but Col. Ball was in the Surgeon General's Office  on September 11, 2001 (9/11), when American Airlines 77 was hijacked by Islamic terrorists as part of the four-pronged attack on America and crashed into the Pentagon. While serving in Iraq, Dr. Ball coordinated medical evacuations for civilians, then re-established health care infrastructure and worked with children injured by cluster bombs. John's quilt was draped by his wife and quilter, Vickie Greenwood.

Scott Bowman's served in the Army from 1984-2009, at numerous duty stations deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation, Desert Storm (Iraq), and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. During his 25 years of service, Scott was proud to have trained new recruits in an active war zone, always mindful of their needs, and sharing with them his person motto of Honor-Freedom-Comfort away from home.  Scott was awarded the Bronze Star and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Scott's wife helped to drape his QOV along with quilter, Vickie Greenwood.

Crisis Center director, Kathy Ray was on hand to receive the 150 Quilts From the Heart that KPQG members are proud to make for residents at the Crisis Center.  As Kathy stated, "These quilts touch many lives. They are made with time, care, and love to provide warmth and a personal item for victims to call their own when they arrive without any personal possessions. These quilts convey a message of Hope at a low point in residents' lives."

The Crisis Center serves Clay, Geary, Marshall, Pottawatomie, and Riley counties, as well as the Fort Riley military installation.  The Center also administers the statewide SafeLine Kansas Hotline.

From October 2023 to September 2024, the Crisis Center provided refuge on 9771 bed nights, with an average stay of 50 days.  In addition to shelter, rehabilitative training and counseling are coordinated.  For more information on the Crisis Center, click on the logo.

Attendees were able to glimpse the variety of Quilts From the Heart with a parade.
